Thomas Laubhan

Thomas Laubhan is a trombonist who finds joy in creating. He has found himself performing on tenor and bass trombone with many creative ensembles in the New York City area, including the Frank Zappa-esque Ed Palermo Big Band, Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, Steven Maglio tribute to Frank Sinatra, and Good Shepherd Collective. He also leads his own jazz quartet with a sound that pays homage to jazz visionaries such as Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, and Thelonious Monk. The Thomas Laubhan Quartet’s debut album is expected to release April 2025. He can be heard on Rebel Alliance Jazz Ensemble’s recordings with Louis Dowdeswell, Roger Ingram, Bobby Shew, and Tom Harrell and on Good Shepherd Collective’s album Live On.

Beyond his stage performances, Thomas is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the development of instrument fundamentals in pursuit of musical expression. He helps students to deepen their understanding and broaden their musical artistry. He has experience teaching trombonists of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Lessons are currently offered through his private studio in person in NYC or online, as well as at Bloomingdale School of Music in Manhattan.

Thomas holds a Master’s degree in jazz studies (performance concentration) from the University of North Texas. At UNT, he studied under professor Nick Finzer and was a member of the One O’Clock Lab Band. His academic journey also includes summa cum laude honors for his bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. During his time in school, he earned an array of competitive scholarships and accolades. Notably, he was a recipient of the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Grant under professor Dan Cavanagh also at UTA and at UNT he was a recipient of the Outstanding Trombone Section award from the inaugural Jack Rudin Jazz Competition hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center.
