How to get the most out of your music lessons
Dear Parents and Students:
Thank you for choosing Bloomingdale to be your home for music education.
Each and every one of you is a part of a very special community dedicated to you and your child’s musical education and life journey. Our primary objective remains the continued musical development of our students. Increasingly, science is revealing how deeply music education can positively affect the brains--and lives--of those who choose to learn it, and a solid music education will leave a profoundly indelible mark on a child’s development.
You may ask: how can I get the most out of this community and investment I am making in my children?
It takes all of us: the student, BSM faculty and staff, and you! Music is learned like a language, the more the student is immersed in an environment where their musical voice is nurtured, the more quickly and deeply they gain the skills to express themselves. This requires hard work and our students must be willing to push themselves to be curious, to be open to new ideas and new people, and to practice consistently! Excellent weekly attendance, arriving prepared for lessons, and performing are essential elements for students to gain the benefits of a solid musical education.
BSM can provide help in many ways. Creating a productive practice space is important, and if that is difficult at home, students are free to practice in available rooms during regular hours. Just give us a call ahead of time and see what is open. Performance experiences offer a chance to grow as a musician and as a person, and we provide supportive performance opportunities for your child to show what they have learned. We host regular Sharing Hours, festivals, a Performathon, competitions, annual juries, and feedback forums.
Please communicate with your child’s teacher and our staff if you have any questions, challenges, or find that your child needs motivation. Someone in our community has been in their shoes before and can help share their perspective, brainstorm ideas, and give support.
Join us during our countless free concerts and community events throughout the year. Use the opportunity to meet current students, alumni, faculty, and other members of the community. Witness the fruit of our students’ labor; they may inspire your child to pursue music much more than ever before.
Whether music is a hobby, a passion, or becomes a career aspiration, these steps ensure you get the most for your child’s musical education at Bloomingdale. All of us here are delighted and dedicated to instilling a lifelong love of music in each individual who is part of our community.
If you ever have questions or need guidance or help, don't hesitate to reach out to your teachers or our front office staff who are ready to help you address any concerns.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the years.
All my best,
Erika S. Floreska
