25+ Years of

Inspiring Our Students

Bloomingdale’s MAP program targets the youth of NYC who possess the talent to compete on an elite musical level, but lack the resources and training necessary to channel their talent into something meaningful and lasting. BSM offers the majority of MAP students a full scholarship, worth roughly $6,500 per year. Each year, between 15 and 20 students are enrolled in the program. Since the program’s inception in 1992, over 200 students have graduated from the program and 99% have gained entry to a conservatory, college, or university.

BLOOMINGDALE GENERATIONS

Ken Michaels
Bloomingdale Board President

Ken Michaels, an attorney and lifelong Upper West Side resident, has a deep passion for music, and strong belief in the mission of the Bloomingdale School of Music: providing music access to the community.

Ken was introduced to Bloomingdale by his parents, Barbara and Arthur, who brought him to free concerts and enrolled him as a clarinet student in the 1970s. He and his wife Lenore enrolled their sons Stephen (piano and voice) and Julian (guitar) as students there in the early 2000s. Ken joined the board in 2012 and has served as Board President since 2014, seeing the school through the hiring of several Executive Directors, and much needed renovations as televised on an episode of George to the Rescue. He has also continued his musical education there – recently taking classes in guitar, banjo, and voice.

This year, we honor the Michaels family’s unwavering commitment to the school and their enduring support in advancing the Bloomingdale School of Music for the enrichment of our entire community.

As Board President, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the school’s growth, ensuring access to high-quality music education for students of all backgrounds. His commitment extends beyond governance—his family has been deeply involved in supporting Bloomingdale’s programs, fostering a culture of philanthropy and artistic excellence. Through his vision and unwavering support, Ken has helped Bloomingdale thrive, leaving a lasting impact on the institution and the countless students it serves.

This year’s benefit will honor our “legacy” faculty members who have been teaching with the school for an impressive 25 to 50 years! So, we sat down with legacy faculty members, Marc Peloquin, Roberto Hidalgo, and Monica Verona, to share some of their favorite memories of teaching at Bloomingdale over the years.

When you join us for this event, YOU will be helping us celebrate Bloomingdale’s incredible legacy and ensure its future for generations to come. Your support will expand access to our music programs, empowering students of all ages to discover the joy of music. All proceeds will go directly toward sustaining and growing our mission.
