“I came to playing out of love for music and want to help others do the same.”
Guitar faculty member Jamie Fox grew up in Los Angeles and spent several years in San Francisco before deciding to fulfill his long-held dream of living in New York City as a musician. Jamie began his guitar studies at the age of eleven. “I grew up hearing the music of Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Brahms and loved that. In jazz, I loved Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and about a thousand others. The Beatles were my gateway into music and I still think they’re great”.
As a performer, Jamie has been guitarist with Blood, Sweat & Tears touring the United States and Canada, guitarist and musical director with Joan Baez as well as being a semi-finalist in the 1995 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in Washington, D.C.
Jamie’s teaching philosophy involves developing a solid technique as well as encouraging enthusiasm for music. “I like to combine a sense of discipline with a sense of freedom to explore music for each individual. I believe that it’s important to learn the fundamentals of reading music and to follow the enthusiasm of every student to wherever that leads musically. I also include explanations of theory that are relevant to comprehending the why of music, not just the how-to physically play the instrument. I came to playing out of love for music and want to help others do the same”.
In addition to performing and teaching, Jamie is also an avid reader and likes to stay physically active.
