Shavon Lloyd

Teaches: Voice

Newly appointed to the BSM voice faculty, baritone Shavon Lloyd was born in New York City and grew up in Middletown, New York. He returned to NYC to continue his studies at The Juilliard School and now makes it his home.

Shavon began singing at the age of 5 and eventually joined the choir in middle school where he discovered his deep connection to music. Singing for him became a natural expression at a young age. Since that time he has pursued a career as a performer and enjoys musical theater, classical art song, classics from the American Songbook as well as Jazz.

His favorite type of performance is singing with solo piano because of the intimacy in storytelling for the audience. His major influences include Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. Some of his favorite composers include Franz Schubert, Robert Shumann, George Walker, and Igor Stravinsky. Shavon was recently selected to be a Gerdine Young Artist for the Opera Theater of Saint Louis where he will be performing in Puccini’s “Tosca” and Scott Joplin’s “Treemonisha”.

As a teacher he has a philosophy that focuses on the individual student. Shavon states the following: “I believe that teaching should be based on the needs and goals of the student. I start each lesson by asking what their goals are and then tailor a program for them based on their response”.
