WHAT Is it LIKE TO BE A MAP STUDENT?

What is music access project (map)?

MAP is a three year, pre-college scholarship program with a mission to prepare talented and deserving students, regardless of financial background, for acceptance into conservatory, college or university. MAP serves a select group of 15 to 20 students annually in a musically intensive after school program, with both jazz and classical curricula. Students receive a weekly 60-minute private lesson, weekly chamber music coachings, and theory class. MAP currently offers need-based scholarships up to 100% coverage.

WHO ARE WE?

We accept applications from students across all schools in New York City. Our current students join us from LaGuardia, Celia Cruz, Frank Sinatra, Hunter College, Bronx Science, Special Music School and Basis Independent high schools.

who is eligible?

Ideal candidates should have at least three years of experience on an orchestral/band instrument, guitar, or piano; they should be entering grades 9-12 and demonstrate achievement on their instrument; they should be seeking a more intensive music education program that could prepare them for professional studies.

MAP PARTNERSHIPS

In addition to our talented faculty and teaching artists, MAP has partnered with the Interlochen School, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Van Lier Foundation, to provide additional scholarships and performance opportunities. MAP provides regular workshops, masterclasses and performance opportunities at the Bloomingdale School of Music and in the extended community.

WHAT MAKES MAP DIFFERENT?

MAP is a boutique program that brings together personalized support and excellence to meet the specific needs of the students. The annual curriculum is curated based on the enrollment. All MAP students are mentored by the MAP Director, who is dedicated to the mission of the program.

MAP ALUMNI

Since its inception 30 years ago, over 200 students have graduated from the program and 99% have gained entry to conservatory, college, or university.

MAP Alumni have an active Facebook page and gather formally every two years for a reunion at Bloomingdale and informally throughout their lives, building on the relationships and friends they have made during their time at BSM.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A MAP STUDENT?

What you need to know

The 2024-2025 MAP program is slated to be an in-person program with lessons and classes taking place at the school building. Applications are due on April 15, 2024. Applying students must provide a completed form including family financial documents and a personal statement. Students selected from the application process will be invited for a live audition at Bloomingdale to be scheduled by the Program Director and Coordinator.

Successful candidates will have identifiable talent, will have demonstrated achievement in their instrument, and will show a clear commitment to serious music study.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

Have at least three years of experience on instrument

In 8th-11th grade at the time of their audition

Demonstrate achievement on their primary instrument

Seeking a more intensive music education program to propel them toward college training

Annual Tuition

MAP is free of charge to families that demonstrate financial need. Significant scholarships are also available to students who qualify by audition and interview.
