Theory in a Box is a free* online music theory course developed by Bloomingdale School of Music. The course features:

• Access to the Theory in a Box Help Desk

The course is designed to be self-directed allowing students to review the rudiments of music and to study intermediate theory topics. There are ten sections in Theory in a Box: rhythm, meter, pitch, the chromatic scale, major scales, minor scales, intervals, keys, triads, and cadences. As students progress through each section, they will encounter a variety of movies, sound files, and images that will help bring the material to life. Interactive trainers, written worksheets, and practice quizzes will help prepare students for the final exam at the end of each section.

At all times throughout the course, help is only a visit, email, or phone call away. The Theory in a Box Help Desk is on-hand to answer any questions a student may have about the material in Theory in a Box. Once completing the course, each student will receive a certificate of completion and will be ready to continue with advanced theory study.
