JAZZ FOR BEGINNERS

APPLIED JAZZ IMPROVISATION

An overview of the fundamentals of jazz improvisation in an interactive combo setting. Musical concepts will be discussed and demonstrated, then applied immediately to common jazz forms and styles. Topics will include chord/scale theory, developing rhythmic time/feel, maintaining form, arpeggios, blues and basic pentatonic usage, dominant chords and the ii-V-I progression. All instruments welcome.

Prerequisites:
Ability to play 5 varied selections from the standard jazz repertoire: Melodic instruments: melody and improvised or transcribed solo. Chordal instruments: melody, chords, and improvised or transcribed solo. Percussion: 5 short demonstrations of ballad, medium swing, uptempo swing, latin feel, and rock styles on drumset.
