Gili Sharett  bassoon

"It is important to me that students enjoy music and love their instrument."

Born and raised in Israel, bassoonist Gili Sharett moved to New York in 1996, after serving in the Army Band for two years."I originally came for a short time but ended up here for twelve years!" Gili began playing bassoon at the age of 16 when she was enrolled at the Thelma Yelin School for the Arts in Givatim, Israel. "I was always fascinated with the bassoon's sound. When you hear an orchestra play and then comes a bassoon solo, it is simply magical."

"It is important to me that students enjoy music and love their instrument," says Gili of her approach to teaching. Gili works with her students to develop the musical tools they need to become a well-rounded musician. "If they play an orchestral piece I suggest they listen to the work or I get them a recording and a score. I also want them to develop a wide array of interests and treat their fellow musicians with respect." As an instructor of a double-reed instrument, Gili incorporates reedmaking into her students' lessons as well. Gili enjoys working with adults and younger students. "Most people start bassoon at age 13 or later as your hands need to be large enough to get around the instrument. I love working with adults as I think that learning at a later age often comes with a strong passion."

As a musician Gili enjoys playing orchestral repertoire and operas. "Ravel and Prokofiev are two of my favorites. I also love Brazilian music, especially Gilberto Gil." Gili especially loves playing chamber music and collaborating with other musicians. She has commissioned and performed music from contemporary composers including Sheila Silver, Yehezkel Braun, Peter Winkler, and Charles Mason, and she is hoping to keep working towards new commissions and enlarging the repertoire for the bassoon. Gili counts her teachers and family for her inspiration.

Gili can be heard often in New York City playing with ensembles such as the New York City Ballet and American Symphony as well as on Broadway. In her free time Gili enjoys exploring the outdoors, swimming, hiking, and biking.
