Community Music Events

Join us for our Free Faculty Concert Series, Instruments Festivals, Student Concerts and Recitals, Master Classes, Performathon, and other open house events. Most events take place at our brownstone in our state of art David Greer Recital Hall or the newly renovated Baisley Powell Elebash Salon. Bloomingdale also presents music events at other Upper West Side institutions, churches and concert halls, and outdoors in the nearby city parks.

Bravo Beethoven! | Virtual Faculty Concert Series

Guest Artist: Federico Díaz | Program Coordinator: José Maldonado

Argentine composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla revolutionized tango music forever. He created his own style in which elements of classical music, tango, and jazz are blended. His life experiences, his education, and his performance career shaped his music. Through a selection of pieces and stories, the world of Astor Piazzolla will be presented in this concert.

Join us for our opening concert featuring music from Argentina, Brazil and beyond.  Voice faculty member Jocelyn Medina will perform songs by Brazilian singer/songwriter Djavan in music that fuses bossa nova, samba and jazz.  Cello faculty member Maria Figueroa joins Paloma Ferante in a program of music for two cellos which will include Astor Piazolla’s Oblivion and a rarely heard set of variations on Mozart’s La ci darem la mano from Don Giovanni by J.J. Friederich Dotzauer.

Our second concert highlights the melodic element of music.  Piano faculty member Nuno Marques performs Beethoven’s lyrical Piano Sonata Op. 110 whose first movement is marked espressivo cantabile molto which translates “in a singing style, very expressively”.  Voice faculty member Rachel Querreveld performs her own original songs with such titles as Just Say the Word and Can You Keep a Secret.

This concert features the combination of violin and piano in repertoire from around the world.  Piano faculty member Mina Kusomoto and guest Everhard Paredes will perform transcriptions of such composers as Chopin, Rameau and Liszt.  Resident Teaching Artists Naho Parrini and Marc Peloquin will present William Grant Still’s Suite for Violin and Piano, a work that was inspired by three sculptures including Richmond Barthe’s African Dancer and Sargent Johnson’s Mother and Child.

#JustForFun

Join guest yoga teacher and violinist, Brian Ford, for a yoga class designed for musicians and musicians at heart! Students will have the chance to engage in a gentle yoga practice to help counteract daily activities such as practicing an instrument and working at a desk that can cause bodily tension and stress. By cultivating mindfulness and body awareness through physical techniques, students can support their music-making and create more relaxation and creativity. Although this class is geared toward musicians, all are welcome regardless of vocation or yoga experience (beginners are especially welcome). Stay to the end for a chance to share thoughts and ask questions!

Transcendental Sounds

Our opening concert of the spring season explores great works of transcendental beauty for the guitar and the piano. Nora Spielma will perform music for solo guitar by Brazilian composers including Villa-Lobos and Clarice Assad. Pianist Tim McCullough will present two composers whose music transcends both time and place. Beethoven with his famous Hammerklavier Sonata and the Concord Sonata of Charles Ives, a piece whose movements are named after the great American Transcendentalists.

Narrative Music

Concert
This concert will explore the fascinating relationship between music and narration. Cellist Molly Aronson will perform a multidisciplinary program that combines works for solo cello with texts by such writers as Shakespeare and J.R.R. Tolkein as well as nature imagery by Marcia Scott. Pianist Olga Gurevich will perform Schubert”s virtuosic masterpiece The Wanderer Fantasy, a deeply evocative work based on one of his own songs in which a wanderer expresses the conviction of being a stranger everywhere.

A4TY – An Afternoon of World Premieres

For 17 years Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) has maintained a special focus on introducing students (ages 7-17) to composition through their A4TY (Album for the Young) Student Composing Program. The March 7th online concert will feature 29 student compositions for solo instruments, all miniature works, 100 notes or less. The concert will also feature the premiere of a newly commissioned work for solo guitar by composer, Jacinta Clusellas.

Moonlight Rhythms

Concert
This concert will feature music that expresses both rhythmic energy and melodic beauty. Percussionist Mark Katsaounis will perform on a variety of percussion instruments from the Middle East, the Meditarranean, and North Africa. Pianist Nuno Marques will perform Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, a work of haunting lyricism and exciting rhythmic drive, as well as Chopin’s famous Nocturne in E flat major.

Vocalist Jocelyn Medina joins bassist Bill McCrossen in a program of classic hits from the early jazz days of Tin Pan Alley. This program features music that was composed by the performers themselves. Vocalists Amber Evans and Rachel Querreveld will collaborate in a program of original songs whose theme is lifting women’s voices. Jazz pianist Michael Cochrane performs his own compositions with bass player Daryl Johns, including a piece that was written during the pandemic and meant to be a source of comfort during these difficult times.

This concert will feature a program of two sets of music performed by two duos. Violist Daniel Lamas and pianist WeiWei Zhai will present works by composers who studied at the Paris Conservatoire, including Cesar Franck and Nadia Boulanger, in music that invokes nostalgia and stimulates the imagination. Eli Asher and Zach Lapidus will perform music that they have been collaborating on remotely, both for their own instruments as well as for non-traditional electronic instruments of their own design.

Judith Olson and Rolf Schulte present the great Sonata for Violin and Piano by Claude Debussy, as well the rarely heard Night Song by Nikolai Medtner, a work evoking a dreamlike night scene.
