Saxophone Sonatas

Description:

This program is comprised of select works that showcase the diversity of the saxophone sonatas. Most of the program is accompanied, but the Sonate by Jeanine Rueff is one of the few unaccompanied sonatas in the saxophone repertoire. Its high level of technicality contrasts nicely with the lyricism of the Sonata by Robert Muczynski. John Harbison's San Antonio is the definition of program music. weaving the story a traveler in the city. It bridges with other cultures music and saxophone sonorities, using Spanish rhythms and extensive use of the altissimo register. The Sonata by John Cheetham is a very straight-forward, listener-friendly work that was composed for Dr. Kenneth Tse at the University of Iowa who is Mr. Sandberg's teacher. The program would also feature a world premier Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, composed by Mr. Sandberg's wife Lisa.
